An interactive installation at the entrance of the Brooklyn museum. Roses seemingly growing out of a crevasse on a table; and you’re free to take one. But the moment you do, you make a pact with the artist promising that you will give that rose to a complete stranger. No explanations. Just give the rose to someone on your travels and spread the “garden.” It is a representation of diaspora, and a rather heartwarming one.
I decided to be the first one to step up and take the challenge, because I wanted to definitely spread this work of art and make someone out there at least smile today. A bunch of my colleagues decided to go for it too, and I’m really glad!
On the subway ride back to Penn Station, my friend saw a little girl dressed in lots of pink, so she decided to give her rose (which was pink) to her. It was really cute! Another classmate gave hers to this person who was standing and promoting love, and they were so happy, thanking her for respect and kindness! As for me, I wasn’t sure who to give mine to. But while we were standing in a group, and we were bumbling about wondering if we should eat or not before the train, a man came up behind me and offered a suggestion about a Shoprite nearby to buy food. I said thanks, and asked the others how they were feeling— then I realized that was the person I must give my rose to for his offering of advice! Before I saw him walk off, I tapped him on the soldier and told him thanks, and that the rose was for him. He seemed reluctant, but I nodded, saying it was okay. He took it and went on his way, and was smiling.
